Ever wondered what it would be like to live in New England in the 17th Century? Publishers Paradox Interactive apparently have and that is the theme of their new free-to-play MMORPG, Salem. Announced yesterday, the plan is to release the game sometime this year.

Paradox Interactive (Dreamlords) have announced their plans to release a new MMORPG sometime in 2011. Salem, as the game is called, takes you to the New World and puts you in the shoes of a colonist who has landed on the mysterious shores of New England.

Salem features many interesting facets which keep it lighthearted in the dark gothic time-frame in which it is set. For example, you may encounter a weeping Squonk on your journeys through the woods. However, you could also come across dangerous creatures such as the dreaded Hidebehind.

One of the most interesting features of Salem is the concept of Permadeath. This game mechanic is not employed in many games, as once you die, your character will no longer be among the living. Though the finer details of how the Permadeath mechanic will function in Salem, the name means that once you die, you are dead. Forever.

Putting you in the shoes of a colonist freshly arriving in the New World, Salem introduces a different approach to the classic style of MMORPGs. Featuring unique crafting, farming and building systems while playing out in 17th Century New England, you will need all your wits about you to survive and avoid Permadeath.
