The free-to-play card game Hearthstone is about to get a massive update, including the Whispers of the Old Gods expansion and a whole load of changes and card backs! The long wait is almost over.
For fans of Hearthstone, this paasdatch has been a long time coming. The brand new expansion, Whispers of the Old Gods, was announced back in March. Since then players and fans have been eagerly awaiting any information and news they could find on release dates and the cards that they could expect to find. Over the course of the last few weeks, community streamers and personalities have been teasing some new individual cards on their streams and YouTube channels, giving fans an idea of what to expect when the main event happens, but Hearthstone players need wait no longer! Patch 5.0 and the Whispers of the Old Gods expansion is going live on the 26th of April, which includes all of the new cards, along with a brand new selection of game modes. Check out the trailer for the new expansion below if you haven’t seen it already.
Whispers of the Old Gods
As you can probably see from the trailer above, we're in for some exciting times in Hearthstone! All-in-all there are 134 brand new cards to take onto the Hearthstone battlefield, all with insidious and mysterious terrors that will change the way decks are constructed and matches are played. There’s a whole load of evil cards to shake things up a bit in the free-to-play card game, and they are available from the 26th of April. As with any Hearthstone release, there is also the option to pre-purchase 50 Whispers of the Old Gods card packs for $49.99. For anyone that pre-orders the new cards, a terrifying new card back will be their exclusive reward. Get ready to start experimenting with the new cards to find out some of the best combinations to beat your enemies in the arena, and theorycrafting some awesome decks!
Brand New Game Formats
Ever since Hearthstone was released, and new expansions have been added, there have been cries of “overpowered” and “anti-fun” when it comes to balancing in the game. When a trading card game has a massive library of cards, it’s sometimes difficult to make sure every single card is well-balanced. In order to combat the balancing problem, and avoiding reaching some kind of card-based critical mass, the Hearthstone developers are adding two main game modes as we have talked about briefly before: Standard and Wild.
- Standard: This mode will allow players to go head-to-head using only the newest cards, along with a core of classic and basic cards to flesh out the set and keep some kind of element of consistency. This makes sure the meta stays fresh, and that one type of deck doesn’t dominate the ladder. (I’m looking at you Patron Warrior and Secret Paladin).
- Wild: This is basically a new name for the hearthstone that we all know and love. This is the format where all of the cards in your collection will be valid, so you can continue to experiment with some crazy decks.
