From the moment that Angry Birds 2 was announced, I couldn’t wait to put my hands on it and find out whether it could live up to its hype. The guys and girls over at Rovio certainly worked hard to create buzz for the latest installment of the Angry Birds franchise. They also made sure to stress that this was the actual sequel to Angry Birds proper, denouncing all other installments that came in between as spin-offs. I have to admit that I was certainly quite skeptical about the casual game from the get-go. But there’s only one way to find out whether a game can live up to its hype – and that’s by playing it! So, without further ado, here’s our Angry Birds 2 Quick Byte.
What a Surprise!
I can’t even beat around the bush in this review! I was thoroughly, positively surprised about Angry Birds 2. It would be an understatement to say that I was biased about the app when I started playing it. Rovio had recycled the same game concept too many times for my taste. Nonetheless, there's no arguing that Angry Birds 2 is a great mobile game and here’s why:
Angry Birds 2 has a stunning cartoon look. The background visuals are picturesque and the character animations are subtle yet poignant. The presentation is definitely worthy of a AAA mobile game.
I was never satisfied with playing Angry Birds proper on my smartphone. It just didn’t quite work for me, because it felt as though the controls were optimized for tablet use. That is not the issue at all anymore in Angry Birds 2. The game is intuitive and ideal to play on a smartphone.
I find that this installment of the franchise offers more tactical freedom than some of its predecessors. You can choose which bird you want to shoot when, which allows you to come up with a working strategy for each level. Each stage has two or more parts now which makes for a more varied gameplay. The new special powers and magical abilities give you a fun boost whenever you need it. Overall, I thought the levels were challenging in a satisfying way considering that the right tactic would always allow me to succeed.
Our Verdict after 30 Minutes
I definitely give Angry Birds 2 two thumbs up! I was very satisfied with the fun game. If a title manages to change my biased opinion so much, it deserves to get two thumbs up. If you are looking for a fun game to play on the go, you shouldn’t hesitate to download Angry Birds 2 – even if you are not a fan of the franchise.
